Quick answer
Build a southbound itinerary in geographical order and choose each stop for its visit or onward connection. SRT's Southern Line timetable lists Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Hat Yai along the southbound corridor as of October 2026. 1 For a simple first itinerary, choose one coastal stay before your island gateway; book each rail segment for the date you will resume. Keep a stopover hotel, a railway station and a ferry pier as separate locations in the plan.
Which southern stop should I choose?
| What you want from the break | Recommended place to consider | What to arrange |
|---|---|---|
| A coastal stay before continuing south | Hua Hin | The active railway entrance and transfer to your accommodation |
| Another coastal town stop | Prachuap Khiri Khan | A purposeful stay and an onward train that calls there |
| A rail gateway for a Koh Tao plan | Chumphon | Station reporting, the road transfer and the boat |
| A Samui or Phangan plan, or a separate town night | Surat Thani | Phun Phin station, any town movement and the chosen pier |
| A farther-south city break or Koh Lipe connection | Hat Yai | The exact local pickup and the remaining road/sea stages |
The shortlist is a planning recommendation. You do not need to stop at all five. Choose the coastal visit you want, then the gateway that fits your destination.
For example, Bangkok → Hua Hin → Chumphon → Koh Tao lets you organise one mainland stay before the island handover. Bangkok → Hua Hin → Surat Thani → Koh Phangan uses a different gateway. Search the actual rail and onward products before turning either sequence into dated bookings.
Why should I plan the final gateway first?
Your last mainland rail stop determines the onward movement. Choose the island or road destination first, then decide where a coastal break fits before it. That avoids riding farther south and returning north simply because you added a hotel in the wrong place.
For Koh Tao, compare the complete arrangements in Koh Tao by rail: Chumphon or Surat Thani?. For Koh Phangan, use Train to Koh Phangan: connecting to the right ferry. Choose the relevant road-and-boat origin as carefully as the train station.
If you are visiting several mainland towns, list the actual railway stations in order before choosing hotels. Then search the onward segment from each one. A destination attractive on a map is less useful if the train you want does not stop there or leaves at an awkward hour.
What should I know before stopping at Hua Hin?
Use the active Hua Hin railway terminal for boarding. The Department of Rail Transport's March 2026 inspection describes the new station serving passenger trains and distinguishes the preserved former building nearby. The familiar historic station building is therefore not a sufficient boarding instruction. 2
Send the active passenger entrance pin to your driver, particularly when you have bags. Allow time to reach the boarding level and find the current departure information. The same inspection recorded accessibility facilities but also incomplete signs and an underground walkway not then in service; do not adopt an old photograph as the complete current walking route. 2
For Bangkok to Hua Hin, choose an arrival that gives you useful time at your accommodation. For Hua Hin to Chumphon, align the next departure with checkout and bag collection. An extra night is worthwhile when it gives you a coastal visit, rather than only a late arrival and an early return to the station.
Is Prachuap Khiri Khan worth adding as well?
Add it when you want a second coastal town stay and have time for that visit. If your itinerary is already short, choose between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan rather than changing hotels simply to add another railway stop.
Prachuap Khiri Khan and the smaller Ban Krut — บ้านกรูด are separate station entries on SRT's timetable. 1 Match the accommodation's location to the station you intend to use. A hotel elsewhere in the province can add a substantial road stage even when the booking address says Prachuap Khiri Khan.
Use Hua Hin to Prachuap Khiri Khan and Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon for a town-to-town plan. If you choose another beach area, ask the property for its suitable railway arrival and organise that road transfer explicitly.
Should Chumphon be a stopover or a ferry connection?
Choose a mainland night when you want to rest, simplify an early reporting time or make a Chumphon visit. Choose the immediate onward connection when the selected train arrival leaves a workable margin for the booked handover.
Do not count waiting at the station as a Chumphon visit. If you want time in the town or another local area, arrange accommodation and transport for that purpose. If you only need to reach the island, concentrate on the reporting point and the included stages.
Use Chumphon station: waiting and finding your pickup for the station handover. Keep Chumphon to Koh Tao separate from the railway leg, unless the selected combined offer explicitly includes the complete journey. The route heading alone does not establish where you report or which pier you use.
Is Surat Thani railway station in the town centre?
No. Surat Thani Train Station is in the Tha Kham/Phun Phin area outside Surat Thani town. 3 If you book a town hotel, add the station-to-hotel movement and the return to the railway or onward departure point.
That gives you three different possible plans:
| Your reason for stopping | Sensible arrangement |
|---|---|
| Rest before an early station-origin transfer | Accommodation that fits the booked meeting point |
| A Surat Thani town visit | A town hotel and explicit movements to and from Phun Phin |
| Continue directly to an island | The actual station-origin road-and-ferry product |
Use Surat Thani station: town, piers and transfer pickups before choosing the hotel location. Do not tell a driver only “Surat Thani station” when the destination is actually a town hotel, bus origin or pier.
For travel on 2 November 2026, day train 43 was listed from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (formerly Bang Sue Grand) at 07:30 to Surat Thani at 16:20. 4 It is a useful day-travel option to compare when you intend a mainland night; it is not evidence that you can catch a particular ferry that evening.
When should I continue to Hat Yai?
Continue when Hat Yai itself or your farther-south onward journey belongs in the trip. Do not add it simply because it is another major station if your intended island gateway is farther north.
If you are considering continuing into Malaysia: entry requirements vary by nationality — some passport holders need a visa and prior approval rather than Malaysia's ordinary visa-free entry. Confirm the current rule for your own passport with the Malaysian authorities or your nearest embassy before booking anything past Hat Yai. Hat Yai and Koh Lipe are both in Thailand; this note concerns entry into Malaysia specifically. Check the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' own published page, which lists requirements by nationality, before planning a border crossing. 5
For a Koh Lipe plan, use Hat Yai station: onward buses, vans and island transfers. Arrange the actual pickup and the remaining road/sea stages. For a city stay, send the hotel your railway arrival and establish room access and bag handling before boarding.
If you later return north, treat that as another dated journey. A northbound train does not share the southbound departure time, and a ferry arrival at a pier is not arrival at the railway.
How do I book a trip with several mainland nights?
- List the places where you will sleep in southbound order.
- Choose the final gateway for the onward destination.
- Search each railway segment on the date you will board it.
- Match each train's arrival to the hotel handover.
- Add local road movements and the complete ferry arrangement.
- Save each ticket under its own origin, destination and date.
- Review the reverse journey separately if returning to Bangkok.
Plan separate reservations for each overnight break. D-Ticket selects a train and passenger allocation for the chosen journey; it is not an open-ended pass for resuming after an unbooked stay. 6
For example, Bangkok to Hua Hin, Hua Hin to Chumphon and the island connection need to line up as three actual purchases or explicitly included segments. Do not leave the middle leg to an assumption that your original through reservation covers it.
Should I use day trains or sleepers between stops?
Choose a day journey when you want daylight travel and can use the arrival time well. Choose a sleeper when its actual station arrival fits the next room or transfer arrangement. Shorter rail segments can be more comfortable by seat when an overnight arrival would create a difficult hotel handover.
Compare the complete cost, including extra rooms and station rides, rather than only the rail fare. A lower-priced night journey can lose its advantage if you need a previous-night room for immediate access before dawn.
Use Thai train classes: seats, sleepers or private cabins? for the on-board choice and Night train to ferry: choosing a realistic connection gap for the gateway timing. Keep your first island activity flexible enough to absorb a delayed mainland arrival.
Common mistakes
- Travelling beyond the useful gateway and backtracking for the island connection.
- Using the historic Hua Hin building as the boarding destination.
- Booking a Surat Thani town hotel as though it were beside the railway.
- Assuming every southbound train calls at every coastal stop.
- Treating a through ticket as several dated onward reservations.
- Planning the return from the ferry's pier arrival instead of railway completion.
FAQ
How many stopovers should I add?
For a simple first itinerary, choose one coastal stay before the gateway. Add another only if it buys you a visit you want.
Is the old Hua Hin station the boarding entrance?
Use the active terminal described above and current passenger signs.
Can I stay in Surat Thani town between trains?
Yes, with an explicit movement between the hotel and the railway in Phun Phin.
Does the sampled day train connect to an evening ferry?
The rail arrival alone cannot establish that. Compare the actual onward reporting and transfer arrangement.
Should I ride to Hat Yai for every island trip?
Choose the gateway for your island plan rather than travelling farther south by default.
Can I resume after an overnight break on the through ticket?
Book the onward dated segment separately, as explained in the booking section.
