Quick answer

For a Thai night train, pack drinking water, an easy meal, a light layer, eye mask, earplugs, toiletries and a charged power bank. As of October 2026, SRT documents toilets, washbasins and 220V sockets in its CNR second-class sleeper specification; that specification does not describe every sleeper coach. 1 Prepare to sleep and manage breakfast independently, then use available onboard facilities as a convenience.

What should you buy before boarding?

Bring a meal you can eat comfortably in a small space, enough drinking water for your own journey, and something for breakfast if you arrive before you want to look for food. Choose sealed drinks and food with manageable packaging. Put them in your overnight bag rather than beneath the rest of your luggage.

For an afternoon departure, plan what you will eat before bedtime. For a late departure, eating before you board may be simpler than opening a full meal after other passengers have settled. Bring a snack if you know you will get hungry later.

If you have allergies or dietary requirements, carry food that meets them. Do not make your meal plan depend on a menu you have not seen. Ask about ingredients before buying additional food; the existence of a dining area says nothing about whether a particular meal suits you.

Pack a small rubbish bag and close it after eating. Choose modest portions that are easy to finish, rather than carrying food you cannot comfortably store overnight. Keep drinks upright and separate from your ticket and electronics.

Will there be a restaurant car?

SRT's CNR specification includes a restaurant car with dining seating and a serving counter. That documents the equipment, not the catering hours, menu or operating status of your particular departure. 1

Read the meal inclusion in your booked product once. If food matters to your choice, look for a stated meal or a current departure-specific catering description before purchase. A class name such as “AC sleeper” alone should not decide your dinner plan.

If a service is available, ask staff how to order, what the price includes and when it will arrive. Agree on the total before ordering. For an early stop, explain that you need the food before your destination. Do not assume every passenger stays on the train until its terminus.

Eat during a comfortable seated part of the journey, if possible. Put hot drinks somewhere stable and avoid carrying them while managing a suitcase through the aisle. Keep your immediate area ready for bed preparation afterward.

Where are the toilets, and what should you carry?

As of October 2026, 12Go's class description places shared toilets at the end of the sleeper carriage. 2

After boarding, locate the nearest toilet and wash area before you need them at night. Notice the route back to your berth and the number on its label. Carry tissues, a small wash kit and hand-cleaning supplies in a pouch you can take with you.

Use secure footwear for walking through the train. Leave your main luggage arranged so you can step into the aisle without climbing over it. Take valuables with you when leaving the berth; do not leave a passport or unlocked phone on the bed.

Try to finish a longer wash routine before the final arrival preparations. If the nearest facility is unavailable, ask staff where you should go rather than opening unfamiliar service doors. Follow the instructions displayed inside the toilet, including how to operate its fittings.

Keep drinking water separate from the water you use for washing. For brushing your teeth, carrying your own bottle gives you a simple plan without depending on unfamiliar fittings or supply labels.

Can you shower on the train?

SRT lists a shower in its CNR first-class specification, alongside an in-compartment washbasin. This is a coach-specific amenity, not an ensuite bathroom promise for every first-class offer. 1

If a shower is important, choose a product with an explicit equipment description. Ask staff where the facility is and whether it is available after boarding. Bring your own compact toiletries and a way to keep wet items separate from documents and clothes.

For a second-class journey, plan a simple wash on the train and a shower at your accommodation. If your hotel room will not be ready when you arrive, arrange how you will handle bags and freshen up. Buying a sleeper does not itself solve the gap between station arrival and hotel check-in.

Will you be able to charge a phone?

The CNR equipment listed in the quick answer is useful when your actual coach matches that specification. Carry your charging cable and a suitable charger, but board with a charged phone and power bank anyway. You should be able to show your ticket and find the onward pickup even if a socket is unavailable.

Download the issued ticket, station map, pickup instructions and accommodation address before departure. Save the booking reference separately so you can retrieve it without searching your inbox. If your purchased product requires paper or ticket collection, follow Thai Train Tickets E Ticket Or Paper Collection; a screenshot does not replace that requirement.

If you use a socket, read your charger's voltage label and keep the cable within your own space. Do not stretch it across the aisle or leave a phone charging unattended. Avoid making your arrival plan depend on uninterrupted charging or internet access.

For entertainment, download what you want before boarding. Headphones make it easier to share the carriage courteously. Keep one way of hearing staff announcements when your destination approaches.

What bedding do you need to bring?

12Go describes staff preparing beds and providing bedding in Thai sleeper accommodation. It also describes curtains around second-class berths. 2

You do not need to pack a full camping sleep system for that accommodation. Bring items that help you sleep: a light layer, socks if you prefer them, an eye mask and earplugs. A compact extra layer gives you an adjustment you can control without depending on the carriage temperature.

Before the berth is prepared, remove what you need from your suitcase. Ask staff for help with the bed mechanism instead of forcing it. Keep heavy objects off your sleeping area and leave a clear route to the aisle.

An upper berth requires you to organize your night bag particularly carefully: put the essentials within reach before settling. If climbing at night is a concern, compare a lower berth before purchase in Upper Vs Lower Berth On Thai Sleeper Trains.

What belongs in a small overnight bag?

Pack the things you will use between boarding and the road or hotel transfer. The aim is to avoid opening your main suitcase in a crowded aisle or at a hurried station stop.

ItemWhy it belongs within reach
Issued ticket and required IDTicket inspection and arrival handover
Phone, charging cable and power bankOffline documents and onward communication
Drinking water, meal and breakfast snackA food plan independent of catering
Light layer, eye mask and earplugsAdjustable comfort for sleep
Toothbrush, tissues and small wash kitA quick wash without unpacking luggage
Secure footwearMoving between berth, toilet and station
Small rubbish bag and wet-item pouchKeeping food waste and damp items contained
Essential personal itemsAccess without retrieving your main bag

Keep the bag compact enough to manage together with your other luggage when leaving the train. Carry valuables separately when visiting the toilet. A suitcase lock does not replace keeping your documents and payment methods with you.

How do you settle in and prepare for arrival?

After boarding

  1. Find your allocated coach and berth before unpacking.
  2. Put the main luggage where it leaves the aisle and exits clear; ask staff if unsure.
  3. Move the overnight items into reach.
  4. Locate the toilet and establish the route back to your berth.
  5. Keep the ticket available until inspection is complete.
  6. Ask about food or bed preparation if you need either soon.

Before your stop

Set an alarm ahead of your scheduled arrival, gather bags while still at the berth, and put the ticket and valuables in their travel positions. If the train is delayed, use its current progress and staff advice rather than assuming your scheduled time is now the actual arrival.

For Surat Thani, keep the onward road voucher accessible instead of putting it away after rail inspection. On Bangkok to Surat Thani, leaving the train may be followed by a reporting point and a vehicle transfer. You want your hands free to manage that handover.

Compare current sleeper products on Bangkok to Surat Thani or Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Choose the accommodation first, then use this packing list to make it comfortable.

Common mistakes

  • Buying no food because a photograph shows a restaurant car.
  • Treating the CNR equipment list as a description of every sleeper.
  • Leaving the ticket and toiletries inside the main suitcase.
  • Using every last bit of phone battery before arrival.
  • Waiting until the station stop to collect scattered belongings.

FAQ

Should I bring dinner?

Yes, or eat before boarding and carry a snack. That gives you a workable plan independently of the catering described above.

Are toilets provided?

The sleeper facilities are described in the toilet section. Locate the nearest one after boarding and carry your own small wash kit.

Does every sleeper have a socket?

Do not infer that from the CNR specification. Bring a charged power bank so your documents remain usable.

Is a shower included with a first-class berth?

The shower described above is a CNR coach amenity. Choose a product with that equipment explicitly identified rather than assuming it from the class name.

Do I need a sleeping bag?

The bedding arrangement is described above. For that sleeper product, focus on personal comfort items rather than a complete camping kit.

Should I set an alarm even if staff know my destination?

Yes. Use your own alarm and monitor progress as arrival approaches; ask staff if you are uncertain which stop is next.
