Quick answer

Book a real berth for every child who needs to sleep, and enter each traveller's correct name, age and height. Thailand's Ministry of Transport states that children over 100 cm and not over 150 cm receive a 50% base-fare reduction, excluding fees; the total booking price can therefore be more than half. 1 The practical family choice is usually adjacent lower and upper berths in the same coach, or a first-class compartment when available—not an assumption that a child will share an adult's bed.

How many berths should I reserve?

Count sleeping spaces, not only adults. One adult and one child who both need to lie down should start by comparing two berths. Two adults with two children should compare four berths, or two first-class compartments if the train and budget allow. A child fare is a fare reduction; it does not automatically include a free reserved bed.

For babies and toddlers, the exact entitlement depends on the railway product's age and height conditions. The Ministry page states its reduced-fare rule by height, while 12Go's Thai guidance also describes free travel for a child under 3 and under 100 cm and a reduced fare for some children under 11 and under 150 cm. These descriptions are not a complete substitute for the fare shown for your passenger. 2

Enter the child's actual details and select the accommodation you need. Do not create a child as an adult simply to obtain a berth, and do not rely on a child travelling free to mean that a separate bed will be made up.

How do I book a family sleeper?

Use the same train and booking for the people who should travel together.

  1. Search the route and date, for example Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Bangkok to Surat Thani.
  2. Add every adult and child as a passenger.
  3. Enter each name exactly as shown on the travel document.
  4. Select the sleeper class and the number of berths that you actually need.
  5. Request lower berths for people who cannot climb, and adjacent berths for the family.
  6. Review the child fare, fees, passenger count and cancellation terms before paying.
  7. Save the issued ticket and check the berth allocation once.

An adjacent-berth request is not the same as a guaranteed cabin. Coaches can allocate upper and lower berths across a compartment or bay according to remaining inventory.

Is a private cabin better for a family?

It can be, especially for two adults and one or two children, but first-class availability is train-specific. A private first-class compartment is a small room, not a family suite, and it normally has a limited number of berths. Confirm that the product is sold for the number of real passengers in your party. See Booking a private Thai sleeper cabin for one or two. 2

Do not buy a single first-class berth and assume children can join without being listed. Do not invent a second adult passenger to force exclusive occupancy. Names and identification details belong to the actual travellers. 3

If the private cabin is unavailable, second-class AC sleepers are the practical alternative. Reserve a lower berth for the adult responsible for a small child and ask for the family to be placed together. The allocation may still be split when only scattered berths remain, so decide whether you can accept that before payment.

What do the fare rules mean in practice?

The 50% rule applies to the base fare for a child over 100 cm and up to 150 cm, according to the Ministry of Transport. Fees, booking charges and berth or class supplements can remain payable. 1 That is why the checkout total is the answer for your trip, not a calculation that halves the adult total.

12Go's public Thai-train guidance gives a different level of detail, combining age and height thresholds for free and reduced travel. Seat61 also describes age bands alongside a height limit. Because those sources do not present the same wording as the Ministry page, use the ticketed fare and the child's actual details for a boundary case such as a child near 3, 4, 11 or 12 years old, or near 100 or 150 cm. 124

Do not delay booking while trying to convert a child fare into a fixed percentage of every ticket component. The important planning question is whether a separate berth is needed and whether the displayed total fits your budget.

How should children sleep on a train?

Treat an upper berth as a climbing requirement. A lower berth is easier to reach and gives an adult a stable place to help a child. If the child is old enough to use an upper berth safely, keep the essentials in the lower berth area and avoid leaving a child alone in the aisle.

Second-class sleeper berths are converted from seats after departure and use curtains for privacy. First-class compartments provide a door, but the room remains compact. 2 Pack a small night bag with water, tissues, medication, a light layer and a quiet activity so you do not reopen the main suitcase after bedding is arranged.

There is no guarantee that a family will receive an interconnecting compartment, a particular side of the coach or a silent neighbour. A request for “family together” should specify the actual need: lower berth, adjacent berths or same compartment.

What documents should I carry?

Keep the booking document and the identification used for every passenger accessible. The booking name should match the passenger's document. Carry a copy or offline image of the ticket in case mobile reception is poor, but protect the original passport and phone.

Check the ticket once for passenger count, child details, date, origin, destination, class and berth numbers. If the ticket shows a different class or a missing child, resolve it before travel rather than hoping the conductor can rebuild a family booking onboard.

What if the family is split across berths?

Ask the seller before departure whether a same-coach or adjacent allocation is possible. If the answer is no, choose between accepting the split, changing date or choosing another mode. Do not swap berths with another passenger until the conductor and both passengers agree; an informal swap can create problems if the train is full.

For a ferry connection from Surat Thani, leave the train with the whole family and all bags together. A family that is split across a sleeper coach may take longer to disembark, so use Night train to ferry: choosing a realistic connection gap when the next leg has a fixed reporting time.

Common mistakes

  • Booking only the adults and expecting free child accommodation.
  • Treating a 50% base-fare rule as a 50% discount on the full checkout.
  • Selecting “sleeper” without counting beds.
  • Using a fictitious passenger name to obtain a private room.
  • Putting a small child on an upper berth without considering access.
  • Booking a tight ferry connection without time to gather children and luggage.

FAQ

Does a child need a separate berth?

If the child needs to sleep separately, reserve a separate berth. A reduced or free fare does not automatically create a bed.

What child fare should I expect?

The Ministry describes 50% of the base fare for children over 100 cm and up to 150 cm, excluding fees. The checkout total and actual passenger details control.

Can two adults and two children share one first-class cabin?

Only if the specific train offers enough berths and all four travellers are listed. Confirm the product's capacity before paying.

Are family berths guaranteed to be together?

No. Request adjacent or same-compartment berths, then inspect the issued allocation.

Is a lower berth better for a child?

It is easier to reach. Request lower berths for children or adults who cannot climb, subject to availability.
