Quick answer
If your Thai train is delayed, stay with the railway's departure information, ask staff for the current status and notify any onward operator before its reporting deadline. If you personally missed the train, ask station staff about a new reservation immediately: as of October 2026, 12Go's general FAQ says no-show bookings are not refundable. 1 A railway-caused delay or cancellation is a different case; preserve the ticket and evidence before deciding whether to travel or request a remedy.
Which problem do you have?
Start with what happened to the booked train and what happened to your booking. A delayed train, an unconfirmed request and a passenger arriving late require different actions.
| Situation | First action | What to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Staff say the train is delayed but still operating | Obtain the current departure estimate and remain available for boarding | Ticket and updated departure information |
| The railway cancels the service | Ask staff to record the cancellation and available alternatives | Cancellation evidence and unused ticket |
| You arrive after the train has departed | Ask for the next suitable available reservation | Original ticket and any replacement booking |
| You paid, but no travel document has arrived | Resolve issuance through the booking channel | Booking reference, payment record and messages |
| The rail journey threatens an onward connection | Notify that operator before its reporting deadline | Both itineraries and its written response |
Do not describe a personal late arrival as a railway delay when requesting help. Equally, keep evidence of a cancelled train so the case is not treated as a passenger simply failing to appear.
How do you establish whether the train is late?
Use the departure board and station staff for the train's current operational status. SRT also provides its official Train Tracking System and publishes 1690 as its call-center number, as of October 2026. 23
Find the train number, travel date, origin and destination on your booking. Give those details to staff, rather than asking only about “the Chiang Mai train” or “the southern sleeper.” Several departures can share a destination.
Check your ticket once for the correct boarding station and date. At Bangkok, Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal (formerly Bang Sue Grand) and Hua Lamphong are different places; if you discover that you are at the wrong station, establish whether you can still reach your actual departure before buying another journey. 4
Ask where to wait, whether boarding has started and how revised information will be announced. If you need to leave the waiting area for food, establish how you will hear the next update. A delayed departure is not permission to disappear from the station until an old estimate.
What should you do while waiting?
Keep your luggage together and your ticket accessible. Charge the phone if possible and save the latest useful message or notice. Do not repeatedly buy alternatives while the original departure remains a workable option.
Write down three things: the current rail status, the onward reporting deadline and the latest time you can act on a replacement. These are your decision points. A revised rail arrival can make an onward journey impractical even when the train itself is still operating.
If you want to abandon the rail journey, go to the station counter before using or surrendering the ticket. Ask what remedy applies to the documented railway disruption and whether taking a replacement changes that remedy. Keep a record of the answer and any transaction.
If the ticket came through an agent, keep its booking record too. The railway's decision about its ticket and the agent's handling of your payment are related steps, but you need evidence for both.
What if the delay threatens a ferry or road transfer?
Contact the onward operator while you still have time to act. Send a short, factual message: booking reference, train number, scheduled arrival, updated estimate and the booked pickup. Ask for the next available departure, any deadline for changing it, and the additional charge, if any.
For Bangkok to Surat Thani followed by Surat Thani Train Station to Koh Phangan, the useful deadline is the station product's reporting time when you bought station pickup. A pier departure alone does not tell you when that road handover closes.
Use Night train to ferry: choosing a realistic connection gap to rebuild the itinerary. For Phuket or Krabi, apply the same sequence to the exact station-origin road product rather than using an island ferry timetable.
Phantip's published FAQ excludes liability for a missed ferry caused by train, bus or traffic delays. That is a particular operator's ferry-connection clause, not a universal statement about every bundle or road transfer. 5
If you bought a combined itinerary, use its named assistance contact and ask what the written terms cover. One booking reference alone does not tell you who pays for a replacement. See Combined tickets: are all your connections protected?.
What should you do if you personally missed the train?
Go to railway staff with the original ticket and ask for the next suitable train with actual availability. Explain your destination and whether you need a seat, sleeper or private compartment. If another train works, obtain the reservation required for that service before boarding it.
Do not treat the original reserved ticket as interchangeable with a later departure. Ask staff to make the booking arrangement explicit. If someone suggests catching the original train at another station, have SRT confirm both permission and feasibility before arranging a vehicle. Do not chase it based only on a map or timetable estimate.
Then update the onward journey. A new train can arrive on a different date or at a different time from the missed one. Move hotel or pickup arrangements where their terms permit, and compare the cost of the complete replacement before paying.
If the next sleeper is unavailable, use Thai sleeper sold out: a practical backup plan. A seat can be a valid choice, but make it deliberately; do not assume “overnight train” means a bed.
Can a railway delay qualify for a refund?
The Ministry of Transport's published guidance allows return of an unused ticket, including railway fare and fees, when the booked train is more than 30 minutes late against its advertised schedule; it also describes rebooking without a fee for qualifying railway-caused problems. The page includes older operational material, so this is published guidance to raise at the counter, rather than proof of the rule's unchanged application in October 2026. 6
Ask station staff to apply the current rule to your ticket before you abandon the trip. Keep the written outcome. Do not read that guidance as automatic compensation for arriving late after taking the journey, or as a promise to refund an agent's separate service charge, hotel or flight.
If you booked through 12Go, its FAQ directs travelers dealing with an operator cancellation to provide evidence to support the case. Preserve the railway notice or message and contact the booking channel with the reference. 1
For ordinary changes, seller conditions and refund handling, see Changing or cancelling a Thai train ticket. A voluntary change and a documented railway disruption should not be presented as the same claim.
What if payment succeeded but you cannot find the ticket?
Search the booking email and account for the travel document, then open the specific collection or exchange instructions. As of October 2026, 12Go's FAQ distinguishes products with an e-ticket indication from products requiring a printed voucher or exchange. 1
If issuance is unresolved, send support the booking reference, travel date and time remaining before departure. State what you received: payment acknowledgment, confirmation, voucher or issued rail ticket. These descriptions help avoid a reply that solves the wrong problem.
Do not buy a duplicate simply because one message is missing. Establish whether the original reservation exists and can be used, then decide on a replacement. See 12Go rail bookings: pending, confirmed or ticket issued? for that status sequence, and Thai train tickets: e-ticket or paper collection? for boarding documents.
On the day of travel, 12Go's FAQ recommends contacting the operator using the contact on the document for operational help; platform support handles the booking case separately. 1
How should you choose a replacement?
Compare the whole journey to your final destination. For Bangkok to Chiang Mai, look at the available trains, buses and flights alongside their actual stations or terminals. For an island, include the mainland transfer, ferry reporting deadline and final arrival.
You can compare alternatives on Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Bangkok to Surat Thani. Keep your original booking evidence while shopping, and note the conditions of any new offer before paying.
If no remaining combination comfortably reaches the final departure, choose an overnight stop or move the journey. A workable replacement is more useful than an optimistic chain that creates a second missed connection.
What evidence should you keep?
- Original ticket and booking reference. Preserve an offline copy before any exchange.
- Disruption record. Save the railway notice or message showing the service and date.
- Timeline. Note when you arrived, when staff announced the problem and what happened next.
- Written alternative. Keep the offered replacement and any stated charge.
- Payment records. Retain receipts for a new journey separately from the original purchase.
- Onward communications. Save the operator's reply about rescheduling or recovery.
Record facts rather than claiming costs will necessarily be reimbursed. Keep names and contact details private when sharing documents for advice.
Common mistakes
- Leaving the station because of an unconfirmed delay estimate.
- Buying a different train while assuming the original berth ticket is valid on it.
- Waiting until after an onward departure to request help.
- Treating a payment receipt as the boarding document.
- Expecting an unused-ticket rule to cover every consequential expense.
FAQ
My train is late. Should I leave the station?
Stay available for boarding until staff give you a clear plan. Use the waiting steps above before deciding to abandon the journey.
Can I use my ticket on the next train?
Obtain the reservation or explicit booking arrangement from staff first, as explained in the missed-train section.
Does missing the train entitle me to a refund?
The quick answer describes 12Go's no-show rule. A documented railway disruption is a separate case, covered in the refund section.
Who should I contact about a missed onward ferry?
Contact the operator or assistance channel named on that booking immediately. Use its actual reporting deadline and ask for available recovery options.
Does a 30-minute delay automatically reimburse my hotel?
The published guidance described above concerns an unused railway ticket. It does not promise reimbursement of a hotel booking.
What if I paid but have no usable ticket?
Resolve document issuance through the booking channel using the steps above before treating the booking as ready to board or buying a duplicate.
