Quick answer

For Koh Samui by train, book a sleeper to Surat Thani Train Station, then a station-origin road transfer and ferry. For travel in November 2026, train 85’s sampled 06:23 arrival is a useful starting choice for Lomprayah’s published 09:30 station departure and 11:45 arrival at Nathon; the rail and ferry schedules come from separate sources. 12 Choose the island pier and the final hotel transfer together, because arrival on Samui does not necessarily mean arrival near your accommodation.

Where does the train journey end?

Surat Thani railway station is in Phun Phin (พุนพิน), outside Surat Thani town. The station name on the booking is Surat Thani (สุราษฎร์ธานี). You still need a road journey to the ferry terminal and then a boat to the island. 3

Search for a transfer whose origin explicitly says Surat Thani Train Station. A town-office departure or an airport departure creates another journey before your booked service begins. Booking the station-origin product keeps that first handover simpler.

For the mainland transfer, use Surat Thani station: town, piers and transfer pickups. Your complete plan should have four parts: railway arrival, mainland road transfer, ferry crossing, and Samui pier-to-hotel transport. Write all four down before paying for anything non-refundable.

Should you arrive at Nathon or Lipa Noi?

Choose the pier against your hotel’s location and its offered pickup. There is no single “Samui ferry terminal” that works for every boat.

As of October 2026, Lomprayah lists Nathon (หน้าทอน) among its Samui offices, while Raja’s Donsak–Samui route identifies Lipa Noi (ลิปะน้อย) as its island terminal. Lomprayah also lists Pralan in Maenam, and Seatran Discovery lists Bangrak. These are distinct locations; an operator’s presence at a pier does not mean your chosen mainland service uses it. 456

Your situationPractical choice
Your accommodation offers pickup from a named pierCompare journeys arriving at that exact pier first
You are staying near NathonStart with a Nathon arrival and obtain the final transfer quote
You are staying near Lipa NoiCompare the Raja arrival with other complete hotel-transfer offers
You are staying elsewhere on SamuiCompare pier-to-hotel cost and timing alongside the ferry
You have another boat or flight afterwardsChoose a complete connection plan rather than assuming the next terminal is nearby

Send your accommodation the operator, pier, scheduled arrival and travel date, not just “we arrive by ferry.” Agree on a fixed meeting landmark and how to notify the driver if the boat changes.

If an offer includes hotel drop-off, enter the actual property and obtain acceptance of that address. Do not substitute a nearby hotel merely to get through checkout unless you genuinely intend to finish the paid journey there.

Which train gives you a useful morning connection?

Start with train 85 for the illustrated Nathon connection. It balances an overnight journey with time before the station transfer. Choose train 83 if you prefer a larger scheduled margin and are willing to arrive earlier. A later arrival reduces waiting but also leaves less room for disruption.

The following departures were sampled for 2 November 2026, all leaving Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal and arriving at Surat Thani the following morning, 3 November. 1

TrainBangkok departureSurat Thani arrivalPlanning trade-off
8318:5004:58More waiting before the morning transfer
8519:5006:23Our starting choice for this connection
17320:1006:46Later arrival, smaller margin
16720:3007:16Least margin among these examples

Lomprayah’s general terms require arrival at its office 60 minutes before departure. Applying that rule to 09:30 gives an 08:30 reporting target and a scheduled gap of 2 hours 7 minutes after train 85 arrives. Use the issued station-transfer instruction if it specifies a different arrangement, and resolve any conflicting deadline before travel. 7

That gap includes getting off the train, gathering bags and reaching check-in. It is not two hours of guaranteed delay tolerance. No punctuality data were supplied, so the recommendation rests on the published timing and the convenience of the arrival hour.

For larger groups or assistance needs, favour more time. Use Night train to ferry: choosing a realistic connection gap to work through your own margin.

How do you book the whole journey?

You can compare Bangkok to Koh Samui as a complete journey, or choose the rail and island transfer separately using Bangkok to Surat Thani and Surat Thani Train Station to Koh Samui.

Work through the purchase in this order:

  1. Choose the Samui arrival pier or an accepted hotel-drop-off product.
  2. Select the transfer’s station pickup, departure date and reporting instruction.
  3. Select a train arriving with a useful margin before that reporting time.
  4. Select an actual sleeper berth if you want a bed.
  5. Read the included legs and missed-connection terms before paying.
  6. Save the travel documents and both operator contacts offline.

The mainland transfer belongs to the date you arrive in Surat Thani. In the illustrated November journey, that means 3 November, although the train leaves Bangkok on 2 November.

Check your ticket once for the rail station, transfer meeting point, destination pier and any collection or printing step. A single purchase can contain several documents. Put them in journey order so the station dispatcher sees the transfer document rather than an unrelated rail receipt.

Use Bangkok to Koh Samui when the complete itinerary matches those requirements. For mixed bookings, keep a simple note showing which company handles each stage.

What will the journey cost?

The rail leg alone in the 3 October sample for 2 November travel ranged from about US$25–39 for second-class AC sleepers and US$43–48 for first-class AC sleepers. Those ranges cover the sampled Surat Thani departures, not just the four trains above. 1

Add the station transfer and ferry, then the final Samui road journey if it is not included. Compare the checkout total for the same number of people and the same final destination. A pier-only product and a hotel-drop-off product are different purchases, even when both are displayed under “Koh Samui.”

Keep any paid seat or berth choice in the comparison. Do not assign the cheaper and dearer ends of the sample range to upper and lower berths: the supplied data did not identify which berth produced each price.

What happens at the station and pier?

After leaving the train, find the pickup location specified for your transfer. Phantip’s official contact page distinguishes its train-station branch from its town and airport branches, illustrating why the exact office matters. 8

Show the transfer document, establish where the vehicle boards, and stay within reach of the dispatcher. Get food or cash only after you know the reporting arrangements. Keep passports, payment cards, medication and your phone with you when larger bags are loaded.

At the ferry terminal, follow your operator’s check-in and boarding instructions. If staff issue another ticket or boarding slip, keep it accessible until the island handover is complete. A road vehicle arriving at Donsak is not yet the ferry arrival on Samui.

On Samui, collect your bags and go to the agreed hotel-transfer landmark. If the arrival pier changes, send the new location before your driver sets off.

What if the train runs late?

Notify the transfer operator when the delay threatens reporting time. Give the booking reference, train number and latest arrival estimate, then request a concrete replacement itinerary and its price before buying another service.

For Phantip products, the published FAQ excludes responsibility for missed ferry connections arising from causes including train delays. Treat that as a reason to establish the particular offer’s remedy before purchase, not as a rule for every company. 9

Use Combined tickets: are all your connections protected? to assess a bundle. A later sailing helps only if it operates, has room and can be reached from your location. Keep enough flexibility for a mainland overnight stay if the viable crossings have finished.

How should you plan the return?

Search Koh Samui to Surat Thani Train Station, with the railway as the final mainland endpoint. Begin with the train departure and work backward through mainland transfer, ferry reporting and hotel pickup. Leave an additional margin for disembarkation and road disruption.

Book an earlier crossing when missing the train would cause a serious problem. Do not assume the outward connection’s timings or inclusions apply in reverse.

Common mistakes

  • Booking a town pickup after arriving at the railway.
  • Giving a hotel driver the island name without the pier.
  • Buying the transfer for the evening train’s departure date.
  • Treating a single payment as a promise of free recovery after a missed connection.

FAQ

Is there a direct train to Koh Samui?

No. The journey described above requires rail, road transfer and ferry, followed by your hotel transfer if needed.

Which train should I compare first?

Train 85 for the illustrated morning transfer; train 83 if you want more scheduled margin. Use the dated table above when comparing live offers.

Is Nathon always the best arrival pier?

No. Choose the pier together with the hotel transfer, using the decision table above.

Can I buy only the ferry?

Yes, if you arrange the mainland journey separately. Make sure your plan gets you to the correct terminal by its reporting deadline.

Does the ferry fare include my hotel?

Only choose it as a hotel-transfer solution when that service and your address are included in the offer. Otherwise budget for the final road journey.
