Which Bangkok railway station is on your ticket?
Quick answer
Bangkok–Chiang Mai overnight trains leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, formerly Bang Sue Grand, as of October 2026; the sampled services also offer boarding at Don Mueang. 12 Choose Krung Thep Aphiwat for a journey starting at the main terminal, or book from Don Mueang when that boarding point suits your location. Hua Lamphong and Thonburi are different stations, not alternative names for the terminal.
Which Bangkok station should I choose?
Match the journey to its rail service first, then arrange the transfer. “Bangkok” is a city-level description on many route pages; the actual departure point is more specific.
| Station | Name to recognize on signs | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal | สถานีกลางกรุงเทพอภิวัฒน์ | The sampled long-distance Chiang Mai departures |
| Don Mueang | สถานีดอนเมือง | Boarding those trains later along their route when booked from Don Mueang |
| Hua Lamphong / Bangkok Railway Station | สถานีกรุงเทพ (หัวลำโพง) | Services specifically departing from the older Bangkok station |
| Thonburi | สถานีธนบุรี | Ordinary western-line journeys toward Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok |
Krung Thep Aphiwat took over the relocated Northern, Northeastern and Southern long-distance services in January 2023. The government notice identifies the new terminal and the affected services.2 The current Chiang Mai sample provides a more recent example of that station arrangement.
Check the boarding station on the issued ticket once, before arranging your ride. Use its full name and save the Thai wording. This catches both an accidental origin selection and an old station alias without turning every later step into another booking check.
What time do the sampled trains leave each station?
The following departures appeared in the InterInformation live 12Go sample, 3 Oct 2026, for travel on 2 November 2026. Times are local to Thailand; the three overnight arrivals are on 3 November.
| Train | Krung Thep Aphiwat | Don Mueang | Chiang Mai arrival | Journey pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 07:30 | 07:45 | 17:50, same day | Day train |
| 109 | 14:15 | 14:32 | 04:00, next day | Afternoon departure, very early arrival |
| 13 | 20:05 | 20:22 | 08:45, next day | Evening departure, morning arrival |
| 51 | 22:30 | 22:47 | 11:40, next day | Late departure, late-morning arrival |
These are dated sample departures, not a complete timetable or a promise for another travel date. 1 Use Bangkok to Chiang Mai for current offers.
The same sample put daytime AC seats at approximately US$19–26 and second-class AC sleepers at US$25–28, observed 3 October 2026. 1 Compare the accommodation and arrival you want before choosing a boarding point for convenience.
The same train has different departure times at the two stations. If you buy from Don Mueang, plan around the Don Mueang time. Do not use the main-terminal time as though it were a second departure you can choose at the last moment.
Is Don Mueang a good option after a flight?
Yes, when you are arriving at Don Mueang Airport and have enough time to reach the railway boarding point. The sample shows a concrete alternative to traveling first to Krung Thep Aphiwat and then passing back through Don Mueang on the train.
Book Don Mueang to Chiang Mai from the start. If you already hold a ticket from Krung Thep Aphiwat, arrange any origin change before substituting your boarding point. A train calling at a station does not by itself change the origin on your reservation.
Plan the connection from the time you expect to leave the airport with your bags, not the scheduled touchdown. Account for immigration where applicable, baggage reclaim, finding the station approach and reaching the correct boarding area. Choose a later departure if the transfer would depend on every stage going perfectly.
Do not apply this shortcut to Suvarnabhumi Airport simply because both airports serve Bangkok. Your arrival airport and train station need to be entered separately in the transfer plan. See Bangkok Airport To Sleeper Train Planning The Transfer.
Are Bang Sue Grand and Krung Thep Aphiwat the same place?
Yes. Bang Sue Grand is the former name of Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. The government's rail-hub description records the earlier Bang Sue name. 2
Use the full current terminal name when giving directions. An unqualified “Bang Sue” can leave the facility unclear, particularly when a navigation result or older article refers to another railway or urban-transit location in the area.
Save this destination wording for a driver: Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal — สถานีกลางกรุงเทพอภิวัฒน์. Add the entrance or drop-off point from your station plan rather than relying on a pin placed somewhere inside a large complex.

Is Hua Lamphong still operating?
Yes. Hua Lamphong remains a station for ordinary, suburban and excursion services, as described in the government's post-relocation guidance reviewed in October 2026. 3 It is not the departure station for the Chiang Mai trains listed above.
An older 12Go Thailand FAQ still calls Hua Lamphong the departure point for most Thai trains. That conflicts with the government's completed relocation and the team's current Chiang Mai sample.421 Use the named service's origin rather than that older generalization.
If your ticket explicitly says Bangkok Railway Station / Hua Lamphong, go there. If a route page merely says “Bangkok,” open the departure details before selecting a station. These two uses of the city name are easy to confuse when booking quickly.
See Hua Lamphong Checking And Boarding Local Trains for journeys that do use the older station.
When should I use Thonburi?
As of October 2026, ordinary trains toward Kanchanaburi and Nam Tok use Thonburi, according to the available specialist station guide. 5
For Bangkok to Kanchanaburi or Bangkok to Nam Tok, distinguish an ordinary rail ticket from an excursion or a tour with a pickup. A product marketed around the Death Railway can start with a vehicle transfer rather than boarding the ordinary train yourself.
If you are taking the ordinary service from Thonburi, save สถานีธนบุรี and the station map location. A general search for the Thonburi area is not precise enough to find the railway entrance. Use Thonburi Station Finding And Boarding Western Line Trains for the approach.
How should I plan the final journey to my station?
1. Choose the departure before the transfer
Select the train and boarding origin first. Then arrange the taxi, public transport or airport connection. Choosing a station only because it is closest to your accommodation can leave you at a building your train does not serve.
2. Keep collection separate from boarding
If your booking requires a ticket handover, put its location into the plan as an earlier stop. The office that gives you a ticket need not be inside the station where you board. See Thai Train Tickets E Ticket Or Paper Collection.
3. Save a usable destination
Keep the station's full English and Thai names, map pin and arrival instructions together. Share them with the other travelers so the group has the same destination even if you take separate vehicles.
4. Find your service at the station
Use the train number and departure time to match the board. A train may be displayed under a destination beyond the station where you will get off. Follow the current platform information at the station rather than a platform number remembered from another journey.
5. Resolve a mismatch before boarding
Show staff the journey details if the train number or origin does not match what you expected. Ask where that service boards. If you have reached the wrong terminal, establish the correct destination and remaining options before paying for a rushed transfer.
Common mistakes
- Navigating to “Bangkok train station” for a Chiang Mai sleeper.
- Treating a collection office as the departure terminal.
- Using Krung Thep Aphiwat's time for a Don Mueang booking.
- Assuming every Bangkok airport is conveniently connected to the same boarding point.
- Following the first train with a familiar destination instead of matching the service number.
FAQ
Where do I board the overnight train to Chiang Mai?
Use Krung Thep Aphiwat or the Don Mueang origin you purchased. The quick answer and departure table above give the sampled station arrangement.1
Can I board at Don Mueang instead of going into the main terminal?
Yes, buy from Don Mueang. If the ticket already names a different origin, deal with that change first; see Is Don Mueang a good option after a flight?
Is Bang Sue Grand an outdated name?
It is the former name of Krung Thep Aphiwat. Use the full current name for directions, as explained above.2
Does every train now leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat?
No. Hua Lamphong and Thonburi still have their own services. Choose by the train's origin, not a rule that covers every Bangkok departure.35
Which sampled arrival is easiest for a conventional morning start?
Train 13's sampled 08:45 arrival offers a simpler morning plan than train 109's 04:00 arrival. Choose according to your hotel and onward arrangements; the times are in the table above.1
