Quick answer

Choose a flight if protecting your time in Chiang Mai matters most, a second-class sleeper if you want a bed while travelling overnight, or a bus if its total price and arrival time suit you better. For travel in November 2026, the sampled Bangkok–Chiang Mai second-class AC sleepers cost about US$25–28, while the daytime AC train seats cost about US$19–26, observed on 3 October. 1 Compare the complete journey to your accommodation before deciding.

Which option fits your trip?

Start with your arrival plans. A cheap journey that leaves you too tired for the next day can cost more in lost time than the fare difference. Conversely, paying for a flight makes little sense if you specifically want the railway journey and have a flexible itinerary.

Your main priorityStart by comparingWhy
Keep the travel day shortFlightsCompare departure times against airport access and hotel arrival
Lie flat overnightSecond-class AC sleeperSelect an actual berth, then choose upper or lower
Travel overnight without a sleeper availableBusCompare the seat and arrival time with seated rail options
See the journey in daylightDay trainSet aside the day for travelling
Spend as little cash as possibleFan seats and busesAdd transfers and the cost of an inconvenient arrival
Arrive ready for a fixed eventTravel the previous dayGive yourself recovery time and room for disruption

These are planning recommendations, not a ranking of every operator. Your tolerance for sleeping in a moving vehicle is a useful deciding factor. If you already know that you cannot sleep sitting up, remove overnight seated services from your shortlist instead of choosing them because the train category sounds comfortable.

Which train arrival is most useful?

For most visitors choosing among the sampled overnight trains, train 13 offers the most convenient arrival pattern: an evening departure and a morning arrival. Train 109 gets you there very early; train 51 preserves more of the Bangkok evening but uses more of the following morning.

The following examples were offered for departure on 2 November 2026. Overnight arrivals fall on 3 November. They show the practical choices in the sample, not every train on the corridor. 1

5122:3022:4711:40, next dayLater departure and later hotel arrival

The Bangkok terminal is Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, formerly Bang Sue Grand. The sampled Don Mueang departures provide another boarding option: select Don Mueang as the origin when buying if that is where you intend to board. An airport arrival and a train departure remain separate connections. 12

Check your ticket once for the exact boarding station, date and accommodation. Do not treat a city search result as permission to board at any station served by the train. See Which Bangkok railway station is on your ticket?.

With the early arrival on train 109, arrange a realistic first few hours: a confirmed early room, somewhere to leave luggage, or a relaxed breakfast plan. Do not count a saved hotel night unless you are comfortable being without a room until the accommodation allows you in.

Is an overnight train actually a bed?

Only if you buy sleeper accommodation. The same train can sell seated and sleeping classes. A second-class sleeper has berths in a shared coach; it is different from a private first-class compartment. Upper and lower berths also differ in access and space. 3

Choose the berth before considering a small fare saving. Someone who finds climbing difficult should prioritise a suitable lower berth. A couple who want a private room should search specifically for the relevant compartment product, rather than expecting two second-class tickets to create one.

For a detailed choice, use Thai train classes: seats, sleepers or private cabins? and Upper vs lower berth on Thai sleeper trains. Pack your overnight essentials where you can reach them without opening every bag. A light extra layer and earplugs are sensible personal preparations, not assurances about a particular coach’s temperature or noise.

When does the bus make more sense?

A bus is worth comparing when sleepers are unavailable, when you prefer its departure point, or when its fare leaves enough room in your budget for accommodation and other travel. Judge the specific seat product and terminal, rather than the word “VIP.”

As of October 2026, Nakhonchai Air’s official Bangkok–Chiang Mai timetable lists daytime and overnight services. Its listed departures imply roughly 9–10¼ hours of scheduled travel. The same page gives a generic nine-hour description, so use the selected departure’s times rather than that headline. It also lists several boarding locations, including the company terminal and Mo Chit. 4

Choose a bus arrival that lets you begin the day comfortably. An overnight coach arriving before dawn needs the same accommodation planning as an early train. If two offers have similar prices, a useful arrival hour can be worth more than a small difference in the advertised journey length.

Ask yourself whether you want a reclined seat or need to lie flat. Compare the actual seat layout and luggage allowance in the offer. “First class” on a bus and first class on a train describe different products; they are not directly comparable comfort grades.

When should you fly?

Fly when the hours saved are valuable: a short holiday, a meeting, or a family itinerary with little flexibility. Thai Airways currently sells Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK)–Chiang Mai (CNX) flights, as of October 2026. 5

Compare the flight’s complete price for your party. Add any baggage, seat selection and airport transfers required by the selected offer. A headline fare for a different date, a return journey or another baggage package is not a useful comparison with your one-way train ticket.

Work backward from the airline’s reporting requirement, then add travel from your Bangkok accommodation. At the other end, include leaving the airport and reaching the hotel. The flight’s departure-to-arrival duration is only one part of that calculation.

If you are arriving internationally, compare a booking that includes the onward flight with a separately purchased domestic ticket. Establish the connection arrangements before deciding that two flight times fit. This is especially important if the itineraries use different Bangkok airports.

How do you compare the real cost?

Use one currency and one travel date when you reach checkout. The rail sample was displayed in USD; it is not a fixed baht tariff.

For travel on 2 November, the observed rail-only ranges were US$8–11 for third-class fan seats, US$14–17 for second-class fan seats, US$19–26 for second-class AC seats, and US$25–28 for second-class AC sleepers, sampled on 3 October 2026. 1

Build a short budget for each shortlisted offer:

  1. Add the fare for every traveller and all selected extras.
  2. Add transport to the departure point and from arrival to the hotel.
  3. Add a room only where you actually need one; do not automatically deduct a hotel night for overnight travel.
  4. Note the cancellation conditions and the cost you would lose if plans change.
  5. Put the expected hotel arrival beside the total.

This makes a comfortable overnight journey, a cheaper seated journey and a faster flight easier to compare fairly.

What if the sleeper is sold out?

For travel on 10 October 2026, the 3 October sample showed no sleepers on trains 109, 13 or 51, only third-class fan seats; train 7 had nothing on sale. That was the availability returned in this sample, not proof that every sales channel had identical inventory. 1

Search a nearby departure date if your itinerary allows it. Otherwise compare buses and flights immediately. Do not buy a seat assuming that someone will upgrade it to a berth on board. Choose seated overnight rail only if you would willingly take that journey in the purchased class.

Compare live options on Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Chiang Mai to Bangkok. Use Bangkok to Chiang Mai once you have chosen your arrival pattern and comfort requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing an overnight seat with a sleeper as if both provide a bed.
  • Forgetting the hours between an early arrival and room access.
  • Choosing a bus by class name without reading the boarding location and seat description.
  • Comparing a promotional return airfare with a one-way rail fare.
  • Booking a fixed activity immediately after a long journey.

FAQ

Which option would you choose for a first visit?

A flight for a short stay; a confirmed second-class sleeper for a traveller who wants the overnight rail experience. Start with the decision table above.

Is train 13 the only sensible overnight option?

No. Its sampled arrival pattern is convenient, but another departure can fit your accommodation or Bangkok plans better. The train table shows the trade-offs.

Can I board at Don Mueang?

The sampled services include that option. Buy for the Don Mueang origin and use the boarding guidance above.

Is the cheapest train the best budget choice?

Only if the seat, arrival hour and additional costs suit you. Compare the complete cost using the five steps above.

Should I wait for a sleeper cancellation?

Keep searching if you can remain flexible, but set a decision deadline. If your travel date is fixed, secure an acceptable alternative before it also disappears.
