Quick answer

Start with the seller named on your booking: use SRT D-Ticket for a direct online purchase and your 12Go booking page for a 12Go purchase. As of October 2026, D-Ticket publishes a cancellation deadline of at least three hours before departure and a 70% deduction; payment by QR PromptPay requires cancellation at a railway station. 1 A 12Go offer can instead be non-refundable, so compare the cost of changing, cancelling and buying a replacement before surrendering your existing seat.

Which booking should you open?

Find the receipt, booking reference and issued ticket together. The payment recipient and booking account identify where you bought the journey; the SRT logo identifies the railway operating it. Those can be different organisations.

SRT provides online and station channels for D-Ticket changes. 12Go recommends making changes through its booking service: a change made directly with the operator may not update the platform's records. 23

For a combined Bangkok to Koh Phangan booking, write down whether you want to change the whole trip or only the railway leg. Moving the train while leaving the transfer on its original date can make the itinerary unusable. Read Combined tickets: are all your connections protected? before treating a single payment as a promise that every missed connection will be recovered.

How much does a direct D-Ticket cancellation return?

The current published D-Ticket deduction leaves 30% of the relevant fare before any separate charges. For example, a hypothetical THB 1,000 fare would leave THB 300 after a 70% deduction. This is arithmetic, not an observed ticket price.

Older government guidance gives a different answer. The Ministry of Transport page describes 20% or 50% deductions and a one-hour cutoff, whereas the current D-Ticket conditions publish 70% and three hours. The Ministry page contains older material, including references to 2009. Use the current D-Ticket conditions for a D-Ticket purchase; the older page is not a basis for expecting its more generous refund. The sources conflict, and the effective rules for a counter-issued ticket need their own station assessment. 14

Before submitting a cancellation, read the transaction's displayed net refund once. Save that amount and the confirmation. Do not assume a service fee, card conversion charge or another seller's markup will be returned with the railway fare.

If you paid by card, D-Ticket describes a return to the purchasing member's original credit or debit card rather than a cash payout. Its published processing allowance depends on the bank. A station cancellation therefore does not mean immediate cash in your hand. 1

Is changing the ticket better than cancelling it?

Often it is worth pricing a change first, especially when a cancellation would lose most of the fare. But compare the replacement accommodation as well as the fee: moving from a sleeper to a seated overnight journey is a substantial change to your trip.

D-Ticket's published change-fee wording is:

Timing as worded by SRTPublished change fee
One day before departure50%
Two days before departure30%
Three days before departure20%

The percentages are based on the value of the latest ticket being changed. SRT permits repeated changes for the ordinary D-Ticket products covered by these conditions, but does not permit changing the passenger's name. The page does not clearly explain every boundary between its day bands; use the calculated fee in the actual change transaction rather than inventing an hourly cutoff. 1

A date change is therefore different from transferring your ticket to a friend. If another person will travel, plan a new booking rather than editing the journey date and handing them your named ticket.

Search the alternative first on Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Bangkok to Surat Thani. Compare berth type, departure station, arrival date and total price. An attractive replacement is useful only if it has the accommodation you need.

How do you change a direct SRT booking?

  1. Log in to the D-Ticket account that bought the ticket and open the relevant booking.
  2. Select the change function and the passengers whose journeys need changing.
  3. Search the replacement date, route and accommodation.
  4. Review the new journey and the amount due before authorising payment.
  5. Save the replacement ticket and retire the old copy from the folder you will use at the station.

These steps follow SRT's public D-Ticket help workflow. 2

For a family booking, work through each passenger deliberately. A successful change for one adult does not tell you that the other adult or child was included. Compare the final passenger list against your travel party and keep everyone’s new documents together.

If you are changing to an arrival after midnight, update the hotel and pickup date too. A train departing on Monday and arriving early Tuesday needs a Tuesday arrival arrangement, even though you bought a Monday train ticket.

What can you change or cancel through 12Go?

As of October 2026, the sampled Bangkok–Chiang Mai offers were mostly labelled “No refunds, no cancellation”; one day-train option allowed cancellation. These were offers observed on 3 October for travel on 2 November 2026, not a universal SRT rule. 5

The general 12Go FAQ describes self-service cancellation for refundable bookings within the applicable window, and date changes where the product supports them. Its terms also say that supplier approval is needed and some bookings cannot be changed even before confirmation or ticket issuance. A paid booking request is therefore not automatically refundable simply because the railway ticket has not arrived yet. 63

Use this sequence:

  1. Open the booking details and the saved conditions of your particular offer.
  2. Look for the available cancellation or change action.
  3. For a change, specify the exact new date, passenger and class, rather than asking only to “move the train.”
  4. Read the proposed fee or net refund and submit the action you actually want.
  5. Save the response and any replacement document. Keep a pending request separate from an issued ticket.

If no action is available, use the support link associated with that booking and send one complete request. Include what you want changed and your acceptable alternatives. Avoid sending simultaneous cancellation and change requests that leave your intention unclear. See 12Go rail bookings: pending, confirmed or ticket issued? for the difference between those statuses.

What if the railway cancels the service?

Record an operator cancellation separately from a voluntary cancellation. Save the dated notice, affected train and booking reference, then request the applicable remedy through your purchase channel.

There is a wording conflict in 12Go's public material: its FAQ describes a refund entitlement following operator cancellation, while its railway terms say cancellation or modification refund requests are not guaranteed. Do not interpret a voluntary “non-refundable” label as the complete answer to an operator-cancelled journey, or promise a payout based on the FAQ alone. Submit the operator evidence and keep the written outcome. 63

For a late train, missed departure or disrupted ferry connection, use Thai train delayed or missed: what to do next. Those situations need different evidence from simply deciding to travel on another day.

Common mistakes

  • Cancelling before finding an acceptable replacement sleeper.
  • Applying direct SRT terms to a seller's separately priced offer.
  • Assuming a booking request can be cancelled freely before issuance.
  • Changing one passenger and overlooking the rest of the booking.
  • Carrying the superseded ticket after a successful change.
  • Moving the train date but leaving the hotel or ferry pickup unchanged.

Keep a small record of the original cost, quoted change cost, cancellation return and replacement price. That makes the decision concrete and gives you an audit trail if the transaction result differs from the quote.

FAQ

Can I get a full refund because my plans changed?

Not automatically. Start with the purchase channel and terms described above; the current direct D-Ticket cancellation deduction is substantial.

Can I give my named D-Ticket to another person?

The published conditions do not allow a passenger-name change. Buy the replacement passenger a suitable ticket rather than transferring yours informally.

Does a railway-counter visit guarantee cash back?

No. The payment-method section explains why a card purchase can still be refunded to the original card.

Should I cancel if the train is late?

First establish whether the service is delayed or cancelled. Record the operator information and use the disruption process linked above.

What if my 12Go booking is still pending?

A pending status alone does not establish a cancellation right. Use the offer conditions and booking-status guide before taking action.

Which document should I use after a change?

Use the replacement ticket issued after the completed change. Keep the old document only as a clearly labelled historical record.
