How to book Thai train tickets: SRT or 12Go?
Quick answer
Book through SRT D-Ticket for a direct railway purchase, or use 12Go to compare rail with other transport and buy through an intermediary; both channels are available as of October 2026.12 For an overnight journey, choose a sleeper before comparing prices. InterInformation's 3 October sample for Bangkok–Chiang Mai travel on 2 November showed second-class AC sleepers at approximately US$25–28, alongside cheaper seated options. 3
Which booking channel should I use?
Use SRT when you already know the train you want and prefer to manage the purchase directly with the railway. Use InterInformation's route comparison and 12Go when you want to weigh the train against a bus or flight, or arrange a journey with an onward transfer.
12Go is the booking intermediary, not the railway operator. Its product conditions govern what you buy through it, so an SRT cancellation rule found elsewhere is not a substitute for the conditions of a 12Go offer. As of October 2026, its terms distinguish the platform from the transport suppliers. 2
| Your main need | Start here | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Buy a particular train directly | SRT D-Ticket | Departure, class and assigned place |
| Compare train, bus and flight | InterInformation route page | Overall journey, comfort and cost |
| Travel onward to an island | Rail and onward-transfer options together | Included train, road and ferry legs |
| Get a bed for an overnight trip | Sleeper results in either channel | A berth rather than a seat |
| Travel with flexible dates | Several suitable departures | Whether a cheaper or better-timed option changes your plan |
There is no useful universal answer to “Which website is cheapest?” Compare the same departure, origin, accommodation and passenger count, then compare the final totals. A seat price and a sleeper price are different purchases.
What does a real Bangkok–Chiang Mai search look like?
In the InterInformation live 12Go sample, 3 Oct 2026, trains 7, 109, 13 and 51 appeared for travel on 2 November 2026. All four had Krung Thep Aphiwat and Don Mueang departure entries. Book from the station you intend to use; Don Mueang is a usable boarding option, not merely an airport name. 3
The sample's price ranges, grouped by accommodation, were:
| Accommodation | Approximate displayed range, US$ | Where it appeared |
|---|---|---|
| Third-class fan seat | 8–11 | Trains 109, 13 and 51 |
| Second-class fan seat | 14–17 | Trains 109, 13 and 51 |
| Second-class AC seat | 19–26 | Train 7 |
| Second-class AC sleeper | 25–28 | Trains 109, 13 and 51 |
Observed 3 October 2026 for 2 November 2026 travel; these are approximate displayed offers, not fixed SRT tariffs or guaranteed checkout totals. 3
For a first overnight trip, start with the sleeper range. For a daytime journey, start with train 7's seated option. If price is the deciding factor, understand that the cheaper overnight products buy a seat for the night, not a bed.

How do I book directly with SRT?
As of October 2026, SRT's published D-Ticket workflow uses an account, journey search, carriage selection, passenger details, place selection and payment. A completed online card payment produces an emailed ticket. 1
1. Prepare the journey and passenger details
Write down the departure date, boarding station, destination and party size. Have passport details ready for each traveler. For a night train, record the arrival date separately so you do not book the wrong hotel night.
Decide what you will accept before searching: a sleeper only, a particular berth position, or a seated alternative. This keeps an attractive headline price from deciding the journey for you.
2. Open D-Ticket and search
Go to SRT D-Ticket, register or sign in, and enter the journey. For the Chiang Mai trains in the sample, use Krung Thep Aphiwat or Don Mueang as appropriate rather than an unspecified Bangkok station.
Search for the whole party. If a smaller party returns results, use that to understand availability; do not buy for only some travelers without deciding how the others will travel.
3. Choose the accommodation
Open the carriage options and select the seat or sleeper you want. Read “fan,” “AC,” “seat” and “sleeper” as separate pieces of information. Enter the passenger details, then review the assigned places together.
For two travelers, make sure the layout fits your plan. Two available berths are not automatically two adjacent berths, and two beds do not automatically mean a private compartment.
4. Review, pay and save
Read the final summary once: names, origin, destination, departure date, train, accommodation, amount and currency. Complete payment, then download the issued ticket. Keep it accessible offline with the purchase record.
Keep the issued ticket separate from the receipt. The receipt records the payment; the ticket identifies the journey and place you purchased.
How do I book through InterInformation and 12Go?
- Open the relevant route, such as Bangkok to Chiang Mai or Bangkok to Surat Thani.
- Select the date and compare suitable departures.
- Open the chosen offer and read the operator, origin and accommodation.
- Review the complete amount and cancellation label before entering payment.
- Enter the travelers' details and complete the purchase.
- Save the resulting ticket or fulfillment instructions.
Why does the same train appear twice at different prices?
The team's October sample includes the same train sold by different sellers: one offer as an instant ticket, another as a more expensive booking request confirmed later. As of October 2026, 12Go's official FAQ also distinguishes immediate confirmation from operator-confirmed products. 34
Compare the train number, departure, class, seller and confirmation method together. A higher price does not automatically buy a better carriage or a faster confirmation. If the accommodation and terms meet your needs, prefer the instant offer when you need certainty now. A request still needs the later confirmation shown in its booking process.
Once a request is processing, follow that order's status before placing another purchase. See 12go Rail Bookings Pending Confirmed Or Ticket Issued.
For boarding documents, apply the instructions on your purchased product once: use its e-ticket, print it or complete the required exchange. The document decision is explained in Thai Train Tickets E Ticket Or Paper Collection.
Can I cancel if my plans change?
Nearly all sampled 12Go offers were labeled “No refunds, no cancellation”; one train 7 option allowed cancellation. Those are the conditions observed on 3 October 2026, not a universal policy for every SRT ticket. 3
Treat a non-refundable offer as a firm commitment. If your date is uncertain, compare an explicitly cancellable offer and read its deadline, fee and refund conditions before paying. “Cancellation possible” does not mean a full refund at any time.
Save the terms alongside the receipt. If you later need a change, start with the seller that took your booking, using the booking reference. Avoid buying a second departure until you understand what happens to the first purchase.
What should I do if payment fails?
Check the booking record before retrying. A failed browser page and a bank notification can leave different parts of the transaction unclear. Save the error message and distinguish a completed charge from a pending authorization.
If the order has an issued ticket, use that booking. If there is an order but no final outcome, send the seller the reference, intended journey and payment error in one message. If there is no order, resolve the payment status before attempting another purchase. This is the point where contacting support is useful: you need an answer about an actual transaction, not general travel advice.
How do I avoid buying an incomplete island journey?
Write the journey as three separate legs: train, station-to-pier vehicle and ferry. Then match the offer to that list. A booking headed with an island's name may contain several transport modes; a ticket ending at Surat Thani station does not itself describe the rest of your trip.
For each included leg, identify the destination and meeting point. Also read what happens after a delay. One checkout can sell several tickets without establishing that the next operator will wait or replace a missed departure.
Common mistakes
- Comparing a fan seat with an AC sleeper as if they were equivalent.
- Selecting Bangkok generally when intending to board at Don Mueang.
- Paying before reading the cancellation label.
- Repeating an unresolved payment and creating two bookings.
- Assuming a receipt includes every document needed for a combined journey.
FAQ
Do I need an agent to buy a Thai train ticket?
No. SRT has its own direct D-Ticket channel. Choose 12Go when its comparison and purchasing process suits your trip.1
What budget should I allow for a Chiang Mai sleeper?
The sample range was approximately US$25–28 for second-class AC sleepers. See the dated price table under What does a real Bangkok–Chiang Mai search look like?3
Can I start at Don Mueang?
Yes: select Don Mueang when buying. The boarding options are listed under What does a real Bangkok–Chiang Mai search look like?3
Should I wait for a last-minute sleeper bargain?
Do not make that your plan when a bed is essential. Buy a suitable available sleeper once your date is firm; investigate missing results with Thai Train Booking Windows Why Seats Are Not On Sale.
Does “Cancellation possible” mean free cancellation?
No. Use the terms described under Can I cancel if my plans change?; the label alone does not establish the amount refundable.3
