Quick answer
Choose the Nong Khai branch for Khon Kaen, Udon Thani or Nong Khai, and the Ubon branch for Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket or Ubon Ratchathani. Those destination groups appear in SRT's Northeastern Line timetable as of October 2026. 1 Search the town you actually want rather than buying a ticket to the branch terminus and hoping to improvise the rest. If your trip includes Korat, check the selected train's calls: some northbound services bypass Nakhon Ratchasima.
Which branch serves the places on my list?
| Place you want to reach | Rail name you may see | Branch to search | Arrival task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khon Kaen | ขอนแก่น | Nong Khai / northern Isan | Match the hotel or onward road address |
| Udon Thani | อุดรธานี | Nong Khai / northern Isan | Use Udon as the booked destination |
| Nong Khai | หนองคาย | Nong Khai / northern Isan | Arrange the local destination beyond the railway |
| Buri Ram / Buriram | บุรีรัมย์ | Ubon / eastern Isan | Match town accommodation or an event pickup |
| Surin | สุรินทร์ | Ubon / eastern Isan | Plan the station-to-hotel movement |
| Si Sa Ket / Sisaket | ศรีสะเกษ | Ubon / eastern Isan | Keep the station identity distinct from the province |
| Ubon Ratchathani | อุบลราชธานี | Ubon / eastern Isan | Account for the station's actual location |
The station names come from SRT's timetable; alternate English spellings are search aids rather than different destinations. 1 Save the Thai name with the selected station record so it is easy to show a driver or railway employee.
If you want Udon Thani, start with Bangkok to Udon Thani. A ticket headed to Nong Khai may pass Udon, but the destination and passenger allocation you buy should match the journey you intend to make.
For Surin, use Bangkok to Surin, rather than defaulting to Ubon because it is the end of the branch. Book the useful station first, then organise the local movement.
Is Nakhon Ratchasima a required interchange?
No. Do not plan a change there unless your selected itinerary actually requires it. A line map describes the network, but it does not tell you that every Bangkok–Nong Khai train follows the same path.
The classic branch description places the split at Thanon Chira Junction — ชุมทางถนนจิระ, after Nakhon Ratchasima. 2 The current SRT table also lists alternative routing: train 25 has calls at Bua Yai Junction, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nong Khai without a Nakhon Ratchasima call. 1
If Korat is an intended stop, search Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima directly. For the next leg, search from the exact station you will use. Do not board a northbound service solely because a simplified map makes Korat appear to be on every path.
Likewise, Nakhon Ratchasima and Thanon Chira Junction are separate entries in SRT's timetable. 1 Match your pickup to the station printed on the selected ticket. The common city nickname “Korat” is helpful in conversation but insufficient as a precise station address.
How do I choose between Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nong Khai?
Choose the station that fits your actual stay. If most of your trip is based in Khon Kaen, reserve that destination and spend the time there. If your accommodation and activities are based in Udon Thani, book Udon rather than riding to the terminus and returning by road.
Choose Nong Khai when that town is the destination you want. A station at the end of a line is not automatically the best base for all destinations along the branch.
For several town stays, search the individual segments such as Khon Kaen to Udon Thani and Udon Thani to Nong Khai. Compare each train's actual call and departure with checkout, bags and your next room arrangement. Keep the visit to each town purposeful rather than moving hotels only because the names are adjacent on a map.
If a selected road trip begins outside the town, book the pickup address separately. A province-level destination and a railway station can describe very different final movements.
How do I choose among Buri Ram, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon?
Start with the reason for the trip: a town stay, visiting people, an event or a road journey beyond the railway. Then choose the station that fits the final address.
For an event, work backwards from when you need to arrive at the venue. Add the station transfer, room or bag handover and time to prepare. An overnight train's morning arrival may be useful, but only if your arrival arrangement handles that hour.
For a rural stay or onward excursion, send the property the railway name and ask it to specify the agreed pickup. Do not assume that a train to the province's main station reaches an accommodation elsewhere in the province.
Use Bangkok to Buri Ram, Bangkok to Surin, Bangkok to Si Sa Ket or Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani as the starting search. Then organise the local completion instead of choosing the farthest railway endpoint by habit.
Where is Ubon Ratchathani railway station?
The railway station is in Warin Chamrap, across the Mun River from Ubon city. 3 If your hotel is in Ubon city, include the road transfer rather than treating the station name as proof that you are beside the room or attraction.
Send the full hotel address and station arrival to the pickup provider. For a return journey, ask for the railway station in Warin Chamrap, not a generic city-centre drop-off. Keep the station map pin with the ticket so that a translated place name does not become the only instruction.
For a pre-dawn arrival, agree room access or bag-only reception before travel. If you want a room immediately, specify the previous room night and the after-midnight arrival. Do not rely on a general early-check-in request as an actual room arrangement.
Should I take a day train or an overnight sleeper?
Choose according to the complete day you want. A day journey suits someone who wants daylight travel and can use the evening arrival. A sleeper suits someone whose next morning room or pickup arrangement is already workable.
Choose the accommodation on the selected train, not merely the branch. Use Thai train classes: seats, sleepers or private cabins? and Upper vs lower berth on Thai sleeper trains when deciding between a seat, a shared sleeper and a cabin product.
If you need a sleeper on a particular date, establish availability before attaching a non-refundable event or hotel commitment to it. Use Thai sleeper sold out: a practical backup plan when the accommodation you need is unavailable. An overnight seated journey is a different comfort choice from the sleeper you originally planned.
Match the arrival calendar date as well as the clock time. A departure on Monday that reaches the town on Tuesday needs a Tuesday pickup; immediate room access before dawn may require the previous hotel night.
Can I visit both branches in one trip?
Yes, but plan the movement between them as its own journey. Do not draw a direct passenger service between two towns merely because both belong to the Northeastern network.
Write your desired order and search each actual origin–destination pair. Compare the usable rail itinerary with a road option when appropriate. If rail requires a change, include the interchange location and waiting interval explicitly. Do not invent a direct Udon–Ubon train from the two branch headings.
For example, a trip that includes Khon Kaen and Surin needs its own connection search between those places. You may decide that concentrating on one branch gives you more time at the destinations and fewer baggage handovers.
How should I book the chosen branch step by step?
- List your actual overnight destinations and final local addresses.
- Match each to the rail station and branch in the table.
- Search the intended boarding date and the exact station pair.
- Review the train calls if Korat or another intermediate stop is essential.
- Choose the accommodation you are prepared to travel in.
- Save the issued ticket and organise room access and local pickup.
- Search and save the return or onward journey separately.
Long-distance Bangkok services in SRT's current table use Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal, formerly Bang Sue Grand, while the table also includes selected services from Hua Lamphong. Use the actual origin for your chosen train. 1
Read Which Bangkok railway station is on your ticket? before organising the city transfer. A Bangkok route heading alone is not enough to choose the departure terminal.
Common mistakes
- Reserving the branch terminus when the intended hotel is in an earlier town.
- Assuming every Nong Khai service calls at Korat.
- Treating Nakhon Ratchasima and Thanon Chira Junction as one station.
- Expecting Ubon's railway to be in the same part of town as a city hotel.
- Drawing an unverified direct train between the two branches.
- Choosing an overnight arrival without arranging the following morning.
FAQ
Which branch serves Udon Thani?
Use the Nong Khai branch and book Udon as your actual destination.
Which branch serves Surin?
Use the Ubon branch and search the specific journey to Surin.
Must I change trains at Korat?
Only if the selected itinerary requires it. The routing section explains why Korat is not a universal interchange.
Are Korat and Thanon Chira the same station?
No. Match the specific railway station on your booking and pickup arrangement.
Is Ubon railway station beside every city hotel?
No. Its Warin Chamrap location requires the actual hotel movement to be planned.
Can I explore both branches without returning to Bangkok?
Search the real connecting journey between your chosen towns. Do not assume a direct service from the network map alone.
